Finding suitable student housing in Guadalajara can be a challenge so we wrote this article to help you find the best option for you. Here are a few options to consider when looking for student housing in Guadalajara.
In Guadalajara, you can find student houses in many shapes and forms. There are big student houses with seventeen or more students living there. Also, you can find some houses that are smaller, like houses with eight rooms. Most houses have a living room where you can chill and watch movies with your roommates. Some houses even have a garden with a swimming pool where you can enjoy the sun. Some houses are having international students from all over the world, and most of them are from Europe. There are also houses that have a mix of foreign and Mexican students, which would be better to improve your Spanish.
Private apartments or rooms in shared houses
Another option for student accommodation in Guadalajara is to rent a private room/apartment. This can be a good choice for students who prefer more privacy or who want to live with a group of friends. The cost of renting an apartment in Guadalajara will depend on the size and location of the room/apartment, as well as the length of the rent.
Many universities in Guadalajara offer student dormitories as a form of student accommodation. These dormitories are usually located on campus and offer a range of room types, from shared rooms to private studios. The advantage of living in a dormitory is that it is often more affordable than other options, and it can be a great way to meet other students and make new friends. Ask your university in Mexico about the options.
If you are interested in immersing yourself in Mexican culture and improving your Spanish language skills, you may want to consider staying with a local host family through a homestay program. Homestays typically include meals and offer the opportunity to learn more about daily life in Guadalajara.
We have generally found that student houses are the most popular and provide a unique experience. We ourselves used this type of accommodation during our first time in Guadalajara and we believe that it is the best choice for most students. Here are the few things we usually consider when looking for a shared house in Guadalajara:
- Costs: one of the main advantages of living in a student house is that it can be more affordable than renting a private apartment. Consider the total cost, including rent, utilities, and any additional fees.
- Location: you may decide to stay close to the university, but it is also very nice to stay in the city center. Consider factors such as public transport, restaurants, shops, and bars when choosing a location. From our experience, universities in Guadalajara tend to be located outside the city center. But most bars, restaurants, etc. are in the city center. Moreover, public transport is quite good and about a 30-minute journey to your university is not too much. Also, Uber is very cheap which you can use as transport to your university or you can carpool with other students which is great to meet new people!
- Roommates: living with roommates can be a great way to make new friends. If you are looking for a shared house, be sure to ask about the number of roommates you will be living with. In our experience, the big student houses are very fun and outgoing and the small ones tend to be quieter. It’s up to you which you prefer!
- Amenities: student houses in Guadalajara can be equipped with various amenities, such as a shared kitchen, living room, and laundry facilities. Also, some student houses have a garden and swimming pool, which is great considering the weather in Guadalajara with lots of sunshine!
