When you are travelling or just living for a short period in Mexico, it’s not possible to get a Mexican bank account. When it’s your plan to live longer in Mexico, you could open one. In Mexico they pay with the Mexican (MXN/MN) Peso, and you can recognize it by the symbol; $. The value of the Mexican Peso fluctuates per day, and we suggest downloading a currency app, like Currency.

Cash or card

Keep in mind to call your bank (or do it online) that you’ll be travelling to Mexico and you’ll use your card over there. This is important because it’s possible that the card does not work otherwise. In our case it was more affordable to use our debit card instead of your credit one, because they ask more fees. We suggest to do some research at your local bank to get the information about the fees of paying abroad and in another currency. What we experienced is that getting cash with your debit card is possible at almost every Mexican bank, but the costs between banks differ. When you are getting cash at an ATM, the bank may charge you a Foreign Transaction fee. Other good ATM’s that you could use are: Santander, Scotiabank, Banorte, CiBanco, and there are a few more (Santander was the cheapest one for us). We (as Dutch students) were not able to pay with our debit card in restaurants, bars, supermarkets etc. Because of this, we paid most of the times by cash and used the credit card as an emergency option. We would like to add that you need to be careful where to use your credit card, just don’t use it on every corner at every shop; go with your gut feeling.

Decline exchange rate

When the bank in Mexico asks you to accept their exchange rate; click on decline!
